Investigation of Opportunities for Lightweight Vehicles Using Advanced Plastics and Composites.

PB2013103220

Publication Date 2012
Page Count 416
Abstract The primary goal of this research project was to identify and evaluate the safety benefits of structural plastics and composites applications in future lighter, more fuel efficient, and environmentally sustainable vehicles. The research objectives of this project were (1) to evaluate the current state of modeling and simulation tools for predicting impact response of composite materials in automotive structures, (2) to investigate weight reduction opportunities in a current vehicle, and (3) to evaluate the impact of such weight reduction on crashworthiness.
