Abstract The National Mesothelioma Virtual Bank is a virtual tissue bank/biorepository consisting of three Academic Health Centers and one patient centered organization whose mission is to provide annotated data on biospecimens to approved researchers. Each AHC has coordinated efforts between the Principal Investigators, clinicians, surgeons, nurse coordinators, pathologists, research associates, tissue bank personnel, data mangers, Clinical and Corporate Contracts Officers (legal support) and specialists in the Office of Human Research and Internal Review Boards. In addition, the coordinating center also contributes systems architects and overall project management support. The inclusion of the word 'virtual' is used to convey the understanding that each collaborator maintains physical control of their specimens until such time as the majority of Research Evaluation Panel members have identified an approved researcher. Only then are specimens shipped to the coordinating institution for further distribution to the recipient. Researchers query the contents of the virtual repository and all associated data over the web. Often times, informal communications precede the formal written Letter of Intent (Lot). Once approved, efforts communication continues to ensure successful result. Any publications resulting from the use of the NMVB acknowledge the resource. Various committees and working groups meet regularly to review the status of requests and otherwise direct the activities. Program officials participate at the Steering Committee level, are represented on the Research Evaluation Panel and are welcome to join the working groups at their convenience. In the near future, when resources allow, additional collaborators will be added. Several institutions have expressed interest, including the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP). Others have been identified as likely contributors and initial contact has been made to Dr. Sugarbaker at Harvard. The MARF Scientific Advisory Board members at MDAnderson expressed interest in collaborating as well.
