Abstract The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) is the Department of Energy's fossil-energy research laboratory. NETL supports the goals in the National Energy Policy by developing technologies that can provide affordable energy without compromising the quality of life for future generations of Americans. The National Energy Policy includes 105 recommendations to promote dependable, affordable, and environmentally sound energy for the future; 46 of these involve fossil energy, our Nation's most abundant and affordable energy source, which is the focus of much of our work here at NETL. As the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) fossil-energy research laboratory, we are charged with developing technologies to provide affordable energy without compromising the quality of life for future generations. Our portfolio of energy technologies includes coal-fired power generation; natural-gas-fired power generation, including fuel cells and combustion turbines; carbon sequestration; gas and oil production and transmission; and the production of clean liquid fuels for transportation and other end-use sectors. This report describes our accomplishments during fiscal year 2001. It responds to the Government Performance and Results Act of 1993 by describing how we have spent taxpayer funds.
