Abstract The purpose of this study was to develop and test the Military Womens Attitudes Toward Menstrual Suppression scale (MWATMS), a military-unique measure of attitudes about menstrual suppression in a deployed environment. A theory-based instrument development process was followed to create an instrument that would reflect military-unique aspects of the environment on attitudes toward suppression of menstruation. Three steps were followed to create and test the MWATMS: (1) Construct Definition and Content Domain; (2) Generating and Judging Measurement Items; and (3) Designing and Conducting Studies to Develop and Refine the Scale. Confirmatory factor analysis yielded a 9-item version of the MWATMS with three components that accounted for 83% of the variance in the data: stress effects, benefits to self, and environmental barriers. The results establish reliability and validity and warrant further testing for validation of this instrument. A measurement of womens attitudes toward menstrual suppression in a deployed environment will provide the knowledge base that military womens health practitioners need to guide women to optimal menstrual health during deployment. This will contribute to appropriate pre-deployment care and improved readiness for female soldiers.
