Abstract The aim of this research study was to describe patient outcomes in active duty personnel, military retirees, and military family members, and associated nursing organizational structures and processes in four U.S. Army hospitals. This continues a study previously funded by the TriService Nursing Research Program (TSNRP) (N98-053) by adding to the data set and comparing the findings to data collected in a similar civilian study. A descriptive, correlative, and comparative design was used. A variety of patient outcomes were measured. These included (1) adverse eventsfalls, urinary tract infection, and decubitus ulcerseach measured by indicators specified by the American Nurses Association; (2) length of stay; (3) severity-adjusted acuity, measured by the Acute Physiological and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE II); (4) patient satisfaction with nursing care, measured by Hinshaw and Atwoods scale, which includes patient satisfaction with the nurses knowledge and technical expertise, ability to give information, and demonstration of personal interest; (5) satisfaction with symptom management (i.e., satisfaction with pain management used as a proxy for symptom management); and (6) health status, using the SF-36. Institutional Review Board approval was obtained from the participating hospitals and universities prior to data collection. Nursing or other personnel were hired from each hospital to be the on-site data collectors. All were oriented to the study via a copy of the grant proposal and a description of the procedures to be followed. Supplies and materials were either obtained at the location or mailed to the site.
