National Technical Reports Library - NTRL

National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract We developed, tested, and demonstrated a high fidelity simulation based transit operations laboratory in order to provide a realistic testing environment for a wide range of exiting transit operational strategies, Advanced Public Transportation Systems (APTS), and other emerging technologies (such as Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)). Our approach was to enhance the transit operations capabilities of MITSIMLab, (an existing microscopic traffic simulation laboratory developed by the MIT ITS program for the design and evaluation of Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) and Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS)) by incorporating travel behavior models and improved representation of transit performance--including transit control, demand, and vehicle movement. The enhanced simulation laboratory, which was tested using a real world case study of BRT, provides researchers and practitioners with a tool for the rigorous evaluation of transit operations and supports future development of innovative service and operational strategies.
