Abstract In the last decade, there has been a proliferation of new drugs and strategies for intensifying the treatments used to combat cancer. These aggressive treatment strategies also have led to increasing toxicities experienced by patients. Often, cancer therapies are evaluated solely on the basis of increased survival. It is critical that outcomes for cancer patients move beyond morbidity and mortality statistics, to include information about quality of life (QOL) during and after treatment. Although QOL has been of increasing interest to nurses, they clearly have indicated a desire to have more information about this topic from the patient's perspective. Quality of life and symptom management were repeatedly ranked as the highest priority by nurses responding to the Oncology Nursing Society Research Priority Survey. This is consistent with the National Cancer Institute's recommendation that QOL be included as an outcome measurement in clinical trials. However, such efforts to date only include a relatively small number of cancer patients.
