Abstract |
Determining concise, critical mobilization competencies for Air Force (AF) nurses is imperative. The skills for AF nurses in the past did not reflect current AF medical doctrine; they were too extensive, geared to only one level of nurse, and lacked humanitarian skills and concomitant clinical informatics competencies. Recently, the AF has developed skill lists, but they have not been systematically validated. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to (a) determine and validate essential clinical and concomitant clinical informatics competencies for AF clinical nurses during battlespace and humanitarian readiness operations and (b) develop a matrix to match these essential competencies with attributes of educational technologies to determine potential training methods for the future. The study plan involved an expert panel of AF active duty, reservists, and National Guard members that developed critical clinical and informatics competencies needed for mobilization operations. Next, a purposive sample of 100 AF nurses (with oversampling) was selected to validate the developed competencies. A Delphi technique was used during this portion of the study. A level of 80% agreement was set a priori as the minimum acceptable level for each competency item. Third, a matrix was created to identify the newly developed competencies with potential educational technologies. Attributes and disadvantages of educational technologies were outlined based upon a literature review and interviews with military educational experts. |
