Abstract Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) are among the nations top public health priorities. One major aim of nursing is to prevent HIV transmission through effective health education. The National Center for Nursing Research stresses that one of its priorities is to identify and test educational strategies to reduce high-risk behaviors associated with transmission of HIV (Larson, 1990). Nursing and other health-related disciplines are challenged as never before to determine the best educational strategies to increase knowledge about HIV/AIDS and reduce high-risk behaviors. The primary aim of this study was to determine if a teaching program based on the health-belief model can increase knowledge about HIV/AIDS and, more important, decrease high-risk behavior
