National Technical Reports Library - NTRL

National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract This review of the literature presents a model, and then describes experimental data extracted from a literature review which indicate the influence of unreliable or imperfect automation on human performance, reliance upon automation and workload. The review indicates a relatively weak coupling between the reliability of automation, and its benefits when it works 'correctly' and its costs when it 'fails'. The latter costs can be distinguished between costs observed during the initial failure, and those observed during subsequent failures. Following the review, we present in an appendix, an annotated bibliography of most of the studies that were reviewed.
