National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract Nonlinear structural analyses which incorporate geometric and material nonlinearties inherent in dams and foundations have the potential to be more realistic than linear structural analysis, or limit equilibrium analyses, which do not account for damage and subsequent loss of load-carrying capability. If modeled correctly, nonlinear analyses can provide increased understanding of the response and failure mechanisms of a structure and can show how load is redistributed under nonlinear behavior. Because of this, the profession is becoming more receptive to nonlinear analyses and must ensure that nonlinear analysis progresses to the point of being a valuable aid in the decision-making process. The first step in this process is to take stock of current capabilities, and where improvements are needed. This document presents the current state-of-practice at the Bureau of Reclamation.
