Abstract The Training Project Grant at Colorado State was used to develop additional industrial hygiene manpower for deployment in U.S. work places. Although only a small number of students were directly supported by the grant during the project period, ancillary benefits were development of internship opportunities for undergraduates; enhancement of baccalaureate level placement in occupational health jobs; strengthening of complementary disciplines (health physics, ergonomics) that resulted in an enhanced TPG program beginning in July 2005; and enhancement of curriculum offerings with industrial hygiene topics throughout the entire Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences. Over 85% of all distributed funds went to direct trainee support (tuition, stipends, professional travel, research support), and only a small percentage of cost was distributed to program administration with a partial staff position. No faculty members were directly supported but their contributions in the guise of funding opportunities pursued and publications produced showed the clear synergism between this TPG and the existing programs of study at Colorado State. The TPG was clearly a highly cost effective mechanism to encourage and to produce industrial hygiene expertise at all educational levels from baccalaureate to doctoral levels.
