Abstract The purpose of this study was to describe the lived experience of shipboard nursing on aircraft carriers. This phenomenological inquiry was grounded in Edmund Husserl's perspectives whereby the goal is to describe the meaning of an experience from the standpoint of those who have 'lived' that experience. 12 Navy nurses (six male, six female) previously stationed aboard aircraft carriers were individually interviewed. Each participant was asked: 'What was your experience as a nurse on an aircraft carrier.' When each participant felt he or she had expended his or her description, this concluding question was asked: 'Is there anything that you have not offered, either positive or negative, about the experience that you would like to add.' The tape recorded interviews were transcribed and in-depth data analysis - utilizing Streubert's ten-step methodological approach - commenced once data saturation was achieved. Organization of the data was aided through the use of the computer program entitled NVivo. Data analysis included carefully reading the interviews to obtain a general sense of the experience; reviewing the transcripts to uncover essences; apprehending essential relationships; and developing a formalized, exhaustive description of the phenomenon. To confirm the credibility of the findings, the exhaustive description was shared with all of the participants.
