Abstract A growing body of scientific evidence links lifestyle behaviors and the occupational environment with the promotion of long-term health. This linkage is of particular interest to the United States military with its emphasis on health and physical fitness for enhanced combat readiness. Unfortunately, the prevalence of cigarette smoking, alcohol abuse, and other poor health practices continues to be high in military populations. Rapid mobilization of both active and reserve forces for peacekeeping and combat missions is becoming the norm, yet systematic studies of health behaviors, workplace relationships and conditions, and their influence on Army Reserve military readiness are almost nonexistent. Additional work is needed to describe factors related to the health and physical fitness of reservists. The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify individual internal health motivation and sociological/organizational workplace factors associated with health-promoting behaviors in Army reservists.
