National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Recovery of Metals from Electroplating Wastes by the Waste-Plus-Waste Method.

Abstract Addition of an acid waste to an alkaline cyanide waste was investigated for five different combinations of electroplating wastes. At the optimum final pH values of the mixtures, metals and cyanides were almost quantitatively precipitated. No evolution of hydrogen cyanide was detected. By a few additional processing steps, significant amounts of valuable metals were recovered for recycling. The waste-plus-waste step is attractive because no reagents are required, metals are concentrated, and a relatively harmless effluent that meets most water quality standards for cyanide content is produced.
