The tables of physical properties are the result of an extensive literature search that has been continued as part of the Bureau of Mines' study of sulfur compounds in petroleum. This study, carried on cooperatively with American Petroleum Institute Research Project 48, is concerned with the types of sulfur compounds that have been found in petroleum, namely the thiols (mercaptans), sulfides (thioethers), disulfides, and thiophenes. The tables in this paper include all of these compounds from C14 to Cn which are composed only of carbon, hydrogen, and sulfur atoms. The values in these tables are from the literature through 1955. The literature was searched for physical property data. Secondary sources, such as Beilstein, Chemical Abstracts, and British Abstracts, were used to locate references, and original sources were consulted except in a few instances. The properties tabulated are boiling point, density, refractive index, and freezing point. At the end of the table of properties for each compound, references are given for such properties as viscosity, vapor pressure, surface tension, and thermodynamic functions. (Author) |
