Abstract The report describes the program that was conducted to develop a fare collection system that would permit collecting a graduated fare on the San Francisco Bay area rapid transit system (BART). While the report is primarily concerned with equipment test and demonstration, it also contains explanations of the rationale that influenced design decisions. The work was necessarily oriented toward BART but the results have potential application to other transportation systems. (Author)
