Abstract The set of prime numbers is treated here as a random phenomenon. In a deterministic set up, the fact that we know the largest prime number does not throw any light on the next prime number. But by imbedding an ergodic Markov chain in the phenomenon of primes we will indicate how one can give odds that the next prime ends in 1, 3, 7 or 9. This is based on the important fact that though one cannot observe a random prime number, one can make observations on random transitions between primes. (Author)
