Abstract The refractory coating is for nuclear reactor fuel or blanket particles. The coating may be alumina, zirconia and yttria. The thermal expansion characteristics are modified by treatment with minor amounts of chromia. A vertical reactor of the fluidized bed type is utilized in the process. The actinide oxide particles are treated with hydrogen containing the vapors of chromyl and aluminum, zirconium, or yttrium chloride. Water is introduced during the process to hydrolyze the vapor.
