Abstract Benzoic acid, (2-[[[[(4-ethoxy-6- methylamino-1,3,-5-triazin-2-yl)amino]carbonyl]amino]sulfonyl]-,methyl ester) (CAS# 97780-06-8) was evaluated for maternal and developmental toxicity. The test substance was administered by oral gavage to 25 rats (CD BR strain) per group at doses of 0, 60, 250, 1000, and 4000 mg/Kg/day on days 7 through 16 of gestation. Among the dams there were no treatment related mortalities or clinical abnormalities during this study. The high dose group exhibited reduced body weight gain and decreased feed consumption. No pathological changes were noted in any groups at postmortem and no differences in liver weights were observed. No adverse effects on reproductive parameters or differences in mean fetal weights were observed. No significant differences were observed in rates of malformations or developmental variation for any treatment group as compared to controls. The percentage of fetuses per litter with variations due to retarded development in the high dose group was significantly higher than controls. The NOEL reported for this study for the dams and fetuses was 1000 mg/Kg/day.
