National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract The physical properties of hydrazine nitrate are described with a view to its application in explosives. It is a water-soluble salt which is less hygroscopic than the related ammonium nitrate. It melts at 71C; the sedimentation problem has to be tackled by a careful grain size choice. It is sufficiently thermally stable; it reacts agressively with iron and aluminum powders, and especially with copper. It is a less sensitive explosive than trinitrotoluene; sensitivity to percussion is 0.65 m kg. In contrast to solid HN, liquid HN is an extremely sensitive explosive; only nitroglycerin is more sensitive. Explosives based on HN have detonation properties which can hardly be obtained with other substances; the most extraordinary property is that the detonation characteristic is not only superior to that of classical explosives, but also partly to that of the starting substances.
