National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Theoretical and Experimental Investigations on Fiber Reinforced Plastic Landing Gear Spring Blades for Light Aircraft.

Abstract The development of several landing gear spring blades for lightweight aircraft is discussed. A special sandwich structure provided high longitudinal stresses in the faces and high shear stresses in the sandwich core. The length of the spring blades made a high bending stiffness necessary; therefore apart from glass fibers, reinforcements with higher Young-modulus as carbon- and Kevlar-49-fibers were also provided for tensile sandwich faces. All blades were statically and dynamically tested on a gravitational fall test-bed. Using Kevlar-49-fibers in the tensile sandwich face, the structural weight could be further reduced and damping conditions improved compared with the GRP-sandwich blade. (Author)
