Abstract The discipline of systems engineering is compared in this talk with the two cultures that C. P. Snow talked about in relation to science and the humanistic arts. System engineering is defined as the art and science of developing an operable system capable of meeting requirements within imposed constraints. There is discussion about the education of engineers, and the problems of teaching design as opposed to analysis. In the talk there is discussion of the design of complex systems, and the failure mechanisms of these systems.
