Abstract	The development of corrosion inhibitors has always been closely allied to the synergistic effects that inhibitor components exert on one another. As a result it is very often a mix of one or more individual elements that give the greatest efficiency for corrosion protection. One example of this is the addition of sodium thiosulphate. Laboratory observations have shown that combination of thiosulphate with cationic nitrogenous inhibitors has a significant effect on improving their performance. The paper presents the results for combined electrochemical and surface analysis studies on thiosulphate and thiosulphate/quaternary amine inhibitor mixtures. The results indicate that the thiosulphate acted to catalyse the formation of a mixed oxide and carbonate film on the surface of the metal and that it took no part of the film composition either discretely or in combination with the quaternary amine. 14 refs., 4 figs., 4 tabs.
