National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract Two spent Redox reactors were transported to U-Plant for regeneration. The old saddle coating material was removed by flushing with water and sodium thiosulfate. The reactors were dried by pulling air through them and regenerated by spraying the Berl saddles with a 5 molar solution of silver nitrate. When the reclamation process was completed and the first reactor was removed from the base plate used to hold it during flushing and regeneration, a large quantity of Berl saddles fell out due to a failed packing support screen. The reactor was opened, the remaining saddles were discarded, and a new screen was installed. It was repacked with saddles coated with 5 molar silver nitrate in the normal facility at Purex. It will be installed following the next reactor failure. The second reactor remained intact and was installed in the C-3 position on 6-17-58. Production has been such that only 78 tons of normal Hanford slugs have been dissolved in C-Cell since installation of the reclaimed reactor. Efficiency of radioiodine removal by this reactor during this time has been greater tha 99%. This compares favorably with two new reactors which were installed in the A-3 and B-3 positions on 4-15-58 and whose efficiencies dropped below 99% following the dissolution of 110 and 75 tons, respectively. 2 tabs.
