National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract The determination of selected properties of Fe-Cr-Gd alloys containing 12, 18, 24, and 30 wt % Cr and up to 5 wt % Gd was completed. Recent improvements in hafnium carbide casting technology include a new mold design which has permitted the preparation of tensile bars. The determination of electrical resistivity, linear expansion, nitrogen reactivity, and shock resistance properties of sections from hafnium carbide ingots, containing free graphite, to elevated temperatures was completed. Progress in the determination of the three binary phase diagrams for thorium with praseodymium, neodymium, and holmium is reviewed and new data are indicated. Of numerous preliminary designs for induction melting reactive metals in a cold-mold crucible, one variation shows considerable promise. Green body fabrication methods have been satisfactorily developed and progress has been made in the refinement of techniques used in the study of the subliquidus phase relationships for the UC-UN-UO system. Efforts have centered on the examination of compositions of the UC-UO and UN-UO binary systems. The study of the thermodynamics of the cold-mold in arc melting was concluded with a series of experiments with larger scale (8-inch-diameter) crucibles. Vacuum arc melting and skull-casting equipment were developed which permit production of conventional cold-mold ingots and vertical-axis centrifugal skull-castings of tungsten-25 rhenium tubing.
