National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract Wet/dry measurements have shown that wet deposition plays a dominant part in scavenging sulphate, nitrate and chloride vis-a-vis dry deposition of aerosol particles. In contrast to regional distribution of SO sub 2 and NOsub(x) concentrations, regional distributions of sulphate and nitrate concentrations in the rain show but minor regional differences between polluted and clean-air regions. Increased trace substance concentrations in precipitation are observed with low-amount precipitation. Deposition of free acids is of some interests for an evaluation of the effect of ''acid'' precipitations on ecosystems. In areas of high SO sub 2 and NO sub 2 concentrations, potential acid deposition by dry-deposited SO sub 2 and NOsub(i) may contribute more to acid deposition than wet H exp + deposition. In urban and rural regions, an enrichment of nitrate was found in the rain as opposed to the aerosol on comparing the sulphate/nitrate ratio in rain and aerosol. (ERA citation 09:046570)
