National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Interim Action Waste Management Plan for the 200-UP-1 Operable Unit.

DE2001782227

Publication Date 2001
Page Count 18
Abstract This interim action waste management plan establishes the requirements for the management and disposal of waste generated from groundwater wells that are used to monitor the 200-UP- 1 Operable Unit as required by the Declaration of the Record of Decision for the U.S. Department of Energy Hanford 200-UP-1 Operable Unit (ROD) (EPA 1997). This interim action is deemed necessary to reduce contaminant mass within the highest concentration of the groundwater plume and minimize migration of uranium and technetium-99 from the 200 West Area. The interim action to be implemented in the 1997 ROD involves pumping groundwater from the operable unit, piping the groundwater to the Effluent Treatment Facility (ETF), and treating that water at the ETF. The ETF removes the uranium and technetium-99 and the co-contaminants of nitrate and carbon tetrachloride. The treated water is discharged to the state-approved land disposal site north of the 200 West Area. This document addresses only waste generated from activities related to pump-and-treat performance monitoring and 200-UP-1 Operable Unit groundwater monitoring. The wells that this plan addresses are identified in Appendix A. This plan supercedes previously issued waste management or waste control plans for these groundwater monitoring-related activities. The requirements for the pump-and-treat performance and groundwater well monitoring are identified in the 200-UP-1 Groundwater Remedial Design/Remedial Action Work Plan (DOE-RL 1997).
