Abstract Hot gas candle filters are currently under development for hot gas particulate cleanup of advanced coalbased power systems. Ceramic materials systems are one option under development for hot gas filters and include oxide/oxide composites, clay-bounded SiC, recrystallized SiC, etc. One concern during plant shutdowns is the availability of reliable data of which to base decisions for resuing or replacing hot gas filters: another is the possibility of predicting remaining service life. The work in this product is directed toward developing nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technology that will allow detection and measurement of life-limiting materials characteristics such as cyclic fatigue from back-pressure pulsing, thermal shock, localized cracking, damage from local burning, and chemical attack.
