National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract We have studied the effect of phosphorus content on the formation and properties of bulk Pd-Cu-P and Pd-Ni-P metallic glasses. It was found that the molar volumes of the Pd-Ni-P bulk glasses plotted as a function of P content follow a straight line whereas those for the Pd-Cu-P glasses follow two straight lines of different slopes, intersecting at a critical P concentration. The transition in molar volume behavior is attributed to a change in the alloy's short-range order with increasing P content. The origin of this structural change is discussed based on x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements.
