Abstract Magnesium gluconate dihydrate has been prepared and tested as a source of material for a magnesium standard in atomic absorption spectrometry. This material meets the criteria for purity (99.9%), stability, weighing factor and flame characteristics and would serve as an ideal standard for serum magnesium. Magnesium gluconate dihydrate has a solubility of 16g/100 ml of water at 25C and can be acidified with a mineral acid to insure a long shelf life as a magnesium standard stock solution.
