Abstract The National Security Strategy of Georgia describes the possibility of a large-scale military intervention into Georgian territory as one of the major threats to its security. For Georgia, diplomacy is the preferred means of resolving a potential crisis, and national leadership is responsible for seeking solutions at the diplomatic level. However, to provide national leadership with ample time to achieve the desired political solution, the Georgian Armed Forces (GAF) must be able to defend the nation's sovereignty. It is critical that the GAF is capable of defending Georgia's territory and her people until the Government finds other ways to resolve the problem. To achieve these goals, the GAF must be able to conduct major combat operations for an extended period without external support. This requires the GAF to develop appropriate warfighting capabilities. This thesis explores the possibility of a large-scale military intervention into Georgia, and delineates the critical warfighting capabilities that the GAF must possess to counter such an intervention. The thesis also suggests ways to develop these required capabilities.
