National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract This report describes work related to some experiments performed at Rome Laboratory with generative planners. The main objective of the project was to provide an understanding of generative planners and familiarization with two different generative planners, O-Plan2 and SIPE-2. The approach was to become proficient in the use of the generative planning systems to define and solve new problems representative of basic planning capability requirements. The Missionaries and Cannibals (MC) puzzle was selected as a starting point because of its simplicity and it deals with simple numerical calculations, an aspect we felt was relevant to application interests. This report focuses on the work with SIPE-2, specifically, our experience encoding the MC puzzle. The process of encoding problems in general is also addressed for providing guidance in defining and solving user-defined problems with SIPE-2.
