Abstract In January 1983 the U.S. Navy opened its first fixed, stand-alone research facility in South America. Known as the Naval Medical Research Institute Detachment(NAMRID), Lima, Peru, it is a component of the Naval Medical Research Institute, Bethesda, MD. NAMRID will conduct research to assess the threats posed to military personnel and the civilian population by prevalent infectious diseases in Peru.
