National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract The apparatus and technique for making differential capacitance measurements on a dropping mercury electrode under computer control are described. Sample results for electrolyte solutions and for aliphatic alcohol solutions are presented. A comparison of interfacial tension and differential capacitance measurements, both under computer control, reveals a source of systematic error in differential capacitance measurements which has generally been ignored in the past. Theoretical and experimental results are used to argue that differential capacitance is not a suitable experimental route to electrosorption isotherms for organic compounds. (Author)
