National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract Precursor B lymphocytes have been identified in fetal mouse livers by their ability to produce Ig-positive lymphocytes. Specific surface markers identifying these precursor cells have not been identified. Primitive Ig-positive lymphocytes bear detectable Ig and are found in fetal livers at 17 days gestation (stage 1). Among the Ig-positive cells in neonatal spleens is a population that bear a relatively high density of surface IgM and fails to express the Mls-determined LADs, surface IgD, or the complement receptor (stage 2). Development of the peak of splenic B lymphocytes with a low-to-intermediate density of surface Ig occurs at approximately the same time as development of surface IgD (stages 3 and 4). During this same period, the number of splenic B lymphocytes with a relatively high density of surface IgM decreases. These data suggest that B lymphocytes that express IgD do so as the quantity of IgM on their surface decreases to a relatively low density (stages 2 to 4). Acquisition of IgD by B lymphocytes with a low density of surface IgM could explain the development of the population of cells with a low-to-intermediate density of total surface Ig that appears in the spleens of maturing mice. Lymphocytes that bear the complement receptor or that express the Mls-determined LADs are found in the spleens of mice that are 2 to 3 weeks old, but their levels do not reach those of adult mice until after 4 weeks.
