Abstract On September 6, 1975, an earthquake of Richter magnitude 6.9 occurred near the town of Lice in southeastern Turkey. Two thousand and eighty-five people were killed and 3,339 were injured in the disaster. The earthquake had a disastrous effect in 193 villages and towns, demolishing 7,713 homes and damaging 8,453 others. Soon after the earthquake the Turkish government implemented a vast restoration program which included rebuilding the town of Lice and building 5,805 homes throughout the area.
