Abstract Present specifications, approved by the Coast Guard for ocean and coastwise merchant vessels, require that the lifejackets be covered with Indian Orange colored cloth (Indian Orange is the fabric color corresponding to International Orange paint). International Orange and Indian Orange have been widely used on liferafts, life floats and lifejackets because of the considerable distance at which the colors may be seen and associated with marine distress. This report discusses observations on the visibility of lifejackets of different colors.
