National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract Current booster vehicles have the capability to inject heavy payloads into orbit, but the geometry requirements of the payloads for manned missions are larger than the vehicle compartment dimensions. To fully exploit these manned and unmanned vehicle system capabilities, an experiment is planned to demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the construction of large structures in space utilizing the technology of expandable structural-material systems. This design study defines the detail configuration of an experiment to demonstrate the deployment in space of small scale parabolic structures of high geometric accuracy which may be manually assembled by an astronaut. An experiment will also demonstrate the applicability of expandable structural-material systems to an airlock which has been designed to exhibit the operational characteristics for use on future manned vehicle missions. This study indicates that parabolic structures up to 100 ft in diameter can be assembled by man in space, and that an Elastic Recovery Airlock can be designed to provide the manned mission requirements. These structures can be constructed of flexible materials and modular components which can be stowed in small high density packages in current booster payload compartments. (Author)
