National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract The purpose of this effort was to investigate possible realizations of a microwave signal processing method to eliminate multipath interference in angle tracking systems. The method treats the case of a direct return wave and a single multipath return wave from a target as a two target problem, and uses a two target signal processor to decouple the two signals and eliminate the multipath interference. Theoretical constraints and limitations on possible lossy and lossless processors were evaluated using scattering matrix formulation. General solutions for the processor element values were found, and these solutions were applied to specific operating situations. Using the scattering matrix relationships, it was found that in general, a lossy processor was possible, but a lossless processor was not. Based on these results, several hardware implementations for the processor were considered, and two complete designs were ultimately presented. (Modified author abstract)
