National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Evaluation of a Rotating Disk Apparatus: Drag of a Disk Rotating in a Viscous Fluid.

AD766083

Publication Date 1973
Personal Author Nelka, J. J.
Page Count 46
Abstract A rotating disk apparatus, designed to attain high shear stresses comparable to those about hulls of full-scale ships is evaluated. Shear stresses were not measured but were inferred from measurements of disk moments. Two disk surfaces were evaluated, hydraulically smooth and sandpaper rough. For the smooth and rough surface disks in air, the experimental moment coefficients were generally greater than the theoretical predictions. Only the smooth surface disk in water gave results lower than predictions. (Modified author abstract)
