Abstract The purpose of this paper is to give an account of recent research on a classical problem in the theory of control: the design of linear control systems so as to minimize the integral of a quadratic function evaluated along motions of the system. The principal contribution of the paper lies in the introduction and exploitation of the concepts of controllability and observability which enables a theory of the regulation problem to be given. In particular, the existence and stability theorems for the regulator problem are proven and the stability properties of the matrix Riccati equation are studied. (Author)
