Abstract	The paper is concerned with the encoding of images in terms of the boundaries separating equal-brightness areas. It is shown that the so-called chain coding scheme can be equally well applied to array-quantized images as to images that are represented by sets of equal-density contours. The coding of straight-line segments is examined in some detail, and three special straight-line properties are derived. It is shown that the eight-directional (chain) coding of contours leads to smoother contours, containing fewer sections, than the four-directional coding. A brief discussion of chain coding and contour-line processing is included. (Author)
