National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract Data was generated that has bearing on the controversy regarding the interpretation of the electro-olfactogram. An odorant exposure technique was developed to take into account new controls indicated to be necessary in EOG studies. These controls involve the need for laminar airflow conditions and care in the identification and patterning of the electrostatic environment. It was found that three different patterns of EOG could be obtained from the same preparation as a function of the controls used. The classic negative voltage response was obtained when the olfactory receptor tissue was exposed to the classic high velocity puff of odorized air without the new controls. A slowly developing negative voltage response to odorized air was obtained when the tissue was exposed to low velocity but not laminar flowing odorized air. In contrast a biphasic wave, with a large initial positive component was obtained when laminar flowing air was used and the electrostatic environment was controlled. Placement of the electrode in non-olfactory tissue as a control, indicates that the latter effect is not electrochemical. (Author)
