National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract A parametric study of Tsai's strength criteria for unidirectional filamentary composites is presented. The purpose of this study is to determine the fiber orientation for the maximum strength under a given biaxial state of stress. The investigation indicates that the best fiber orientation depends upon the shear strength of the material in relation to its transverse strength. When the shear strength is less than the transverse strength, the optimum fiber orientation coincides with the principal stress direction. However, when the shear strength is greater than the transverse strength, the best fiber orientation does not always coincide with the principal stress direction. The results of this study are presented in the form of plots. The plots together with the equations presented in the text aid in determining the optimum orientation. (Author)
