National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract The room temperature reactions of disilane and digermane with potassium metal were examined in 1,2-dimethoxyethane. The reaction with digermane can apparently be described by the following two equations: xGe2Hs + K yields xGeH4 + 1/x(-GeH2-)x + K; GeH4 + K yields KGeH3 + 1/2 H2. The main products from the reaction between disilane and potassium are silane, non-volatile polysilanes and potassium silyl. In a separate experiment, it was found that at room temperature silane does not react with potassium; therefore, the potassium silyl must come from direct cleavage of disilane or polysilanes formed from the disproportionation reaction.
