National Technical Reports Library

The National Technical Information Service acquires, indexes, abstracts, and archives the largest collection of U.S. government-sponsored technical reports in existence. The NTRL offers online, free and open access to these authenticated government technical reports. Technical reports and documents in its repository may be available online for free either from the issuing federal agency, the U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Federal Digital System website, or through search engines.

Abstract A study was made to establish optimum exposure conditions for the radiographic detection of minimum size defects in thicknesses of graphite varying from four to sixteen inches. Through the use of grids and associated techniques, 0.5 per cent sensitivity or better was attained on high density graphite as follows: 4 in. Graphite -- 0.5 per cent sensitivity on M, single emulsion on M and HD films at 110 KV; 8 in. Graphite -- 0.4 per cent sensitivity on AA film at 150 KV; 12 in. Graphite -- 0.35 per cent sensitivity on HF film with Cobalt-60; 16 in. Graphite -- 0.3 per cent sensitivity on HD film with Cobalt-60. Other parameters and techniques were investigated, such as direct X-ray magnification, screens, films, developers, and position of defect. The use of the grid made the greatest contribution towards an increase in sensitivity. (Author)
